Someone has died after being hit by a train in Worthing this afternoon (Monday 11 August).
Rail services between Hove and Worthing were cancelled in both directions for almost five hours while the emergency services dealt with the scene.
Services were also disrupted on the Brighton to London main line after a power failure and then a broken-down train
The fatal collision was in the East Worthing area just after midday, leading to all services being cancelled between Hove and Worthing.
And a broken-down train between Gatwick and Haywards Heath affected passengers in both directions, with the disruption expected to last until the end of the day.
Earlier, the power supply failed, affecting main line trains into and out of Brighton.
At 12.21pm, Southern tweeted: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between Worthing and Hove.
“Both lines are blocked between these stations while the emergency services work to deal with this incident.”
All west coastway lines were reopened by 5pm although the train operator warned of delays and service changes.
Southern said: “All lines have now reopened and we are working hard to get back to our timetable.”
The company also said: “A broken-down freight train is blocking the line which is usually used by southbound trains through Balcombe. This will also have an effect on northbound journeys.
“Some trains will take it in turns to use the other line, in both directions, past the broken-down train.
“However, there will be a number of cancellations and service changes. You are likely to need to use an alternative service or change trains more often to get to your destination.
“We expect you will need to leave at least 45 to 60 minutes of extra time for your journey and possibly more.”
