The council is asking for feedback on its plans to tackle illegal parking in Western Road with a new red route.
Double red lines are more strictly enforced than double yellows – and crucially allow councils to use cameras to catch people parking illegally on them.
Red routes were introduced in Lewes Road and London Road on a trial basis last year, with extra loading bays added after an initial consultation on the plans.
Although traders complained about over-zealous policing of the loading bays, the council have hailed the scheme a success saying there has been 85.7% reduction in bus passenger injuries there. The schemes were made permanent in March.
Now, Brighton and Hove City Council wants to introduce them in Western Road between Holland Road and Montpelier Road (The Wick Inn in Hove and Waitrose in Brighton) and Queens Road.
The six-week consultation launching today is just for the Western Road stretch. It closes on 4 January 2026
Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport, said: “We see a lot of antisocial parking on Western Road which impacts on traffic, safety and bus journey times through this busy part of the city. A red route will mean we keep it safe and moving.
“We’ve seen the positive impact the red routes in London Road and Lewes Road are having; safer for bus passengers, pedestrians and cyclists while also making the road less congested for drivers and improves the look and feel of an area.
“The consultation we had on the London and Lewes Road schemes led to a number of changes, including more loading bays, so it’s important people have their say and tell us how they think the scheme could be improved and best work for the whole community.”
