Three charged over Hove pub shooting

Three people have been charged after a firearm was shot into a pub in Hove, leaving a man with minor injuries.

Carlos Cassidy, 45, and Memis Kalmis, 43, have been remanded in custody ahead of their next court hearing, charged with possessing a firearm with intent to cause violence at the Poets Corner Ale and Smokehouse in Montgomery Street.

Sade Ward, 40, is also charged with the same offence, but she was remanded on bail during the hearing at Brighton Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Cassidy, formerly known as Martin Bennett, of no fixed address, Kalmis, of Stonery Road, Portslade and Ward, 40, on Montague Street, Brighton will appear at Lewes Crown Court on 13 May.

The incident happened at about 10pm on Saturday, 4 April. A man in his 30s sustained a minor injury, and officers, including armed response officers, were deployed to the scene.

Police made five arrests between 5 and 12 April in connection with the investigation.

A 25-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence was bailed, pending further enquiries.

A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and has been bailed, pending further enquiries.

Detective Superintendent Suzanne Joseph said: “This has been a fast-paced and complex investigation. We understand that this incident has caused concern for the community in Hove, but I would like to reassure everyone that we are taking the incident extremely seriously.

“This was an isolated incident that does not pose a threat to the wider community, and incidents of this type are extremely rare.

“We have made five arrests in connection with the incident and three suspects were charged to appear in court.

“We continue to conduct wider enquiries and we are working closely with those impacted. Anyone with further information about what happened in urged to come forward if they have not already done so.

    Native people doing native things. No pic for these outstanding brightonians. Good to see pics of glass stairs being replaced at ikea free publicity. Can argus investigate why the potholes not being filled in and where does the allocated money go.

      Incoherency put aside, you can see the details on pothole repairs in the council’s budget meeting on their website. I warn you, it’s several pages, and a lot of words with no pictures.
