PREVIEW: Bach’s St John Passion at Brighton Festival – Brighton Dome
A striking new staging of one of classical music’s greatest works comes to Brighton Dome Concert Hall this May, as Britten Sinfonia joins forces with Brighton Festival Chorus and Brighton Festival Youth Choir for an immersive retelling of Bach’s St John Passion.
Presented as part of Brighton Festival this Bank Holiday Monday 4 May at 7.30pm, a one-off contemporary interpretation of Bach’s St John Passion promises something far beyond a conventional classical concert performance.
Sung in English to bring immediacy and fresh clarity to the story, Bach’s powerful meditation on suffering, persecution, compassion and redemption is given a vivid modern resonance. Directed by Brighton Festival Chorus’s James Morgan, the production dissolves the usual boundaries between performers and audience, with the chorus performing entirely from memory while moving through the space, creating a live shared experience rather than a traditional staged recital.
The performance features an exciting international cast of young soloists, including tenor Nick Pritchard as the Evangelist, alongside Benjamin Schilperoort, Edward Grint, Lauren Lodge Campbell, Helen Charlston, Bastien Rimondi and Olivier Bergeron, many drawn from Les Arts Florissants and its acclaimed young artists’ academy, Le Jardin des Voix.
Adding to the sense of occasion, community choirs — and audience members — will also have the chance to join in the chorales, turning this into a collective act of musical storytelling involving hundreds of voices. Early booking is recommended, with the event already marked as selling fast.
St John Passion takes place at Brighton Dome Concert Hall on Monday 4 May, 7.30pm. Tickets and full details are available via Brighton Festival.
