PREVIEW: Angélique Kidjo – Brighton Dome
One of the most celebrated voices in world music comes to Brighton this May, as Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo brings her acclaimed Hope Tour to Brighton Dome Concert Hall for what promises to be a vibrant and uplifting Brighton Festival performance.
Taking place on Saturday 16 May at 7.30pm, the concert will showcase an artist whose extraordinary four-decade career has consistently pushed musical boundaries while remaining deeply rooted in the sounds and traditions of West Africa.
Born in Benin, Kidjo has released 16 albums and built an international reputation for music that joyfully crosses borders. Her music blends the rhythms and vocal traditions of her childhood with American R&B, funk and jazz, alongside Latin and European influences. The result is a sound that is rhythmically rich, politically engaged and full of life.
A five-time Grammy winner, Kidjo’s influence stretches well beyond her own catalogue. She has explored the experience of the African diaspora through her work, reimagined Remain in Light by Talking Heads through an African lens, and paid tribute to legendary salsa singer Celia Cruz in performances that celebrate musical heritage while making it feel urgent and contemporary.
Her most recent album, Mother Nature, is perhaps her most forward-looking work yet — bringing together young artists from across West African music, Afrobeats, Afro-pop, dancehall, hip-hop and alternative R&B. It’s a record driven by optimism, solidarity and the belief that music can help build a more connected world.
Kidjo’s live performances are renowned for their energy, warmth and sheer force of personality. Her commanding voice is fearless, soulful and endlessly expressive, and is matched by a magnetic stage presence that turns every concert into both celebration and call to action.
For Brighton audiences, this is a chance to experience a truly global artist at the height of her powers — joyful, politically sharp and utterly captivating.
