A kebab shop owner has secured a late licence at the fifth attempt after he agreed not to sell takeaways after 11pm.
Bahaaeldin Abdelalim, 44, the owner of the Lebanese Grill, at 62 Queen’s Road, Brighton, will be able to sell food and drink until 1am daily to customers eating in and for delivery.
The application was Mr Abdelalim’s fifth attempt to be able to stay open later. Previously, he applied to trade until 3am and 5am for takeaways when the premises was known as Station Grill.
By opening to dine-in customers and offering deliveries to homes and business addresses only, Mr Abdelalim’s latest application complied with council licensing policies.
Before the hearing, Mr Abdelalim had agreed draft licence conditions with Sussex Police which will now form part of the business’s late-night refreshment licence.
The conditions included a requirement for hot food to be wrapped and unavailable to eat by a customer on leaving the premises. And delivery drivers must show their faces in areas covered by security cameras.
Licensed door staff would have to be employed as and when requested by Sussex Police in writing at least 48 hours in advance or through the owner’s written risk assessment.
Such times would be expected to include bank holidays, Pride weekend and when music events and football matches are taking place.
Brighton and Hove City Council held a licensing panel hearing last Thursday (6 August) after receiving an objection from a rival business, understood to be Albion Kebab. The company did not attend the licensing panel hearing.
The panel was made up of three councillors – John Hewitt, Ivan Lyons and Paul Nann – and they said that all the issues raised by the objector were addressed by the agreed conditions.
The council’s decision letter said: “The panel considers that the application has been well presented and thought through with extensive agreed conditions to be applied to the licence.
“The panel appreciates that the applicant and his agent (Graham Hopkins, of GT Licensing Consultants) have worked hard to come to agreement with the responsible authorities so that their concerns about the location and operation of the premises were dealt with and therefore no representations were made by them.”
But did he pay the councils legal bill from the 4 previous attempts or did he change the business name to get out of payment. Now that would be some good information to include in the article.???
Might be worth looking at WHO allows or gives out permits when there is an obvious oversupply of the same type of outlets in the same area running at the same extended opening times, or is that question a bit on the disallowed team ?? how many more will get these extended opening times before it’s classed as TOO MUCH ??
