Just the job: il primo Brighton Italian Festival gets under way today

The first Brighton Italian Festival gets under way today (Thursday 2 October) with a mix of music, comedy, food and cocktails, talks and workshops … and Vespa scooters.

The organisers said: “The Brighton Italian Festival (BIF) was born from the desire to celebrate the vibrant, soulful side of Italy – right here in the heart of Brighton.

“Founded and artistically directed by William Ranieri, the festival is a love letter to Italian culture, inspired by his 22 years in the city and a touch of homesickness.

“This first-ever edition brings over 20 events across October, spanning food, music, cinema, language, wellness and community – infusing Brighton with la dolce vita.”

There’s an Italian job lot of events in the coming weeks, starting this evening with a free talk at the i360.

The event – Meet Monty – features a chance to hear from Marco Montemagno, one of Italy’s most influential digital entrepreneurs and communicators, in a rare appearance in Britain.

The official launch event takes place on Saturday at Horatio’s Bar on the Palace Pier including live music from Italian-Brightonian bands.

On Sunday, look out for the Italian Scooter Job: A charity Vespa ride through Brighton, inspired by a favourite of film fans, The Italian Job.

Starting from Madeira Drive at 10.30am, the organisers promised “a playful tribute to The Italian Job” for anyone wanting to ride along.

They said: “Scooters visit three Italian hotspots – Nanninella, Pizza 500, the George Payne and Crocodile Café – each offering Italian nibbles.

“The final stop is at Quadrophenia Alley, decorated with Italian flags. A 20-minute film will be created from the ride.

“And there’s a charity focus. It’s a free event supporting Sussex Homeless Support. Donation point for new or good-condition socks and boxers at the final stop – or drop-offs at participating restaurants.”

Other highlights include a comedy night at Komedia on Monday 20 October, with cross-cultural stand-up comedy featuring British and Italian performers.

And on Friday 24 October, the new festival bows out with Opera in the Paganini Room: A unique performance in the very room where Paganini once played at the Old Ship Hotel.

Workshops and tastings will include pizza-making, pasta sessions, wine pairings and language meet ups.
