A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with starting a fire in a basement flat in Brighton at the weekend.
Sussex Police said: “On Saturday (29 August), emergency services responded to a report that a fire had begun to spread inside the living area of a house in Warleigh Road.
“Officers assisted with road closures and no injuries were reported after the blaze was promptly brought under control by the fire service.”
Tinashe Kangira, 33, of no fixed address, but formerly of Warleigh Road, was arrested near by on suspicion of starting the fire.
Police said: “The following day, he was charged with arson with intent to endanger life.”
On bank holiday Monday (31 August), he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody.
He is due to appear before a judge at Lewes Crown Court on Monday 28 September.
