New political party to hold inaugural meeting in Brighton

A new political party, Left Unity, is to hold an inaugural public meeting in Brighton on Tuesday (3 June) at 7.30pm.

The meeting, at the Friends Meeting House in Ship Street, Brighton, will hear from the national secretary of the new party, Kate Hudson.

Left Unity was set up last November. It said that it already had more than 2,000 members and 50 branches throughout the country.

Pip Tindall, secretary of the Brighton and Hove Left Unity branch, said: “In 1945 millions of Britons voted for a new, more equal society.

“Yet in under a lifetime we see our governments dismantling the welfare state and selling off the public services we all rely on, with virtually no opposition.

“All the main parties prefer to blame the poor and migrants, rather than admit that putting profit before people is destroying our society.

“We need to challenge that view.”

The party said that Left Unity had been formed to provide an alternative for those currently unrepresented by the austerity politics of the main parties.

It stood for equality and common ownership, services run for public need rather than private greed, and to restore the rights of ordinary people to housing, healthcare, education, employment, justice and social security.

Brighton and Hove Left Unity chairman Andy Richards said: “This is a new kind of party, with feminism, socialism and environmentalism at its heart.

“It’s a party that supports the campaigns and struggles of ordinary people for public services, for equality and for real democracy.”

The meeting is open to anyone wanting to know more about the new party.

Left Unity could be wonderful news for the greens and other parties.

The green-left could leave the Green Party and join Left Unity – the green-left could come ‘out from the shadows’ and be with like-minded socialist activists and ideological environmentalists.

The Green Party itself could become a sensible centre party and focus on pragmatism and finding economical realistic solutions to environmental issues – perhaps even stopping frightening people over alleged dangers of fracking and realise that it has a lot to offer the environment? Perhaps they could introduce policies that reduce emissions in the centre of town by getting traffic moving more quickly?

Left Unity can get the real left-wing/socialist/communist vote and concentrate on fighting austerity without having to worry about all the various disjointed green policies on things like uncontrolled 20 mph zones, unused cycle lanes, Mx on council forms for the confused and gender neutral toilets.

All other parties would do well as this will cause a split in the left-wing/eco-activist vote and this would hinder their chances of getting elected as councillors, MPs or MEPs.

It looks like win-win for everyone!

In your dreams Patchy. Fracking isn’t going to be a central plank of any party that really takes the environment seriously. There is also a natural tendency of environmental groups towards communitarian and, if you like, socialist type actions as we cannot achieve meaningful environmental change without coming together, planning and working through the issues and having a vision of what the future looks like.

A turbo capitalist environmental party is an oxymoron.

@Hjarrs – just stick with your ‘you have to be a left-wing/communist ideologist to be worried about the environment’ and watch the green party disappear into obscurity.

So I am concerned about the environment and centre-right, so I am an oxymoron, so I can’t be worked about the environment?

Therefore I must not care about the environment anymore?

Alternatively if I am left wing I have to be worried about the environment?

You green fanboys are more deluded than I could possibly have imagined!

I hope the Greens and Left Unity have a wonderful relationship together – you seem well suited!

Sorry Patchy, but while it is perfectly possible on an individual basis to be environmentally responsible whatever your political views, the “free market” system that delivers wealth into the hands of the very few is simply not delivering on the environment is it? Take carbon trading as an example of classic market failure.

The Conservatives, who said they would be the greenest government ever, yesterday watered down the environmental requirements for new housing for the benefit of developers. UKIP will be fighting in the EU against environmental legislation and funding. I bet you voted for at least one of these parties.

@HJarrs – back to name calling again – you really are a poor immature advert for the greens – keep up the good work!

As I have stated MANY times, my voting is private – the key point is that I would NEVER vote for the incompetent ideological extreme left-wing controlled Green Party.

And I repeat that if you must link the desire for protecting the environment with a need to have a communist state then this is great news for very other party and I think you should make sure you publicise this openly so that everyone knows what the green party really is.

At least I can definitely see Caroline Lucas switching allegiance to Left Unity – it looks exactly right for her style of activism and stops her being tainted by the disaster that has been the green ‘led’ council, sycophantically supported by ‘talent’ such as yourself.

Roll on May 2015 and the elections – only 11 months to go!

@HJarrs – just checking – will you be providing ‘Left Unity’ with the same level of fanboy support that you have given the Green Party? Before you do, you might want to go to the meeting on 3rd and check they actually want your sort of ‘backing’?

And I wonder if the ‘Left Unity’ will be similar to the UKIP meetings in Hove where the Greens encouraged groups of activists from the Socialist Workers Party (another oxymoron!)/UAF to stand outside calling everyone attending racists?

Do you think the other parties will be similarly so undemocratically childish and send people to stand outside and call those attending marxists?

HJaars.. There are also no “Turbo Socialist Environmenal Parties” either.. just the same old rubbish repackaged.. All the same – left or right – all on an ego trip – spending other peoples hard earned money on their vanity projects.. Always someone else’s fault and no solutions..

Want to know what the ordinary bods want?

It’s to be left alone.. Not fleeced … Not treated like an idiot or a criminal..

But as the vic and bob say ‘you just can’t leave it alone’ …

Lol, even Caroline ‘5 Homes’ Lucas told HJarrs to stop posting nonsense on the Argus website.

Sit-back and watch the incompetent, ultra politically-correct ‘snot’ Green Party tear themselves to pieces…

@HJarrs Well, you need to do some reading up about your ‘Dear Leader’, don’t you? Caroline ‘Brussels’ Lucas and her multi-millionaire property developer husband Richard Savage own five properties in the UK alone…

@Hjarrrs So all the information about ‘Brussels’ husband Richard Savage and his multi-million Pound property development business, that is available to read at Companies House, is all fabricated too, is it?

The only thing that one can say about Caroline ‘Brussels’ Lucas is that she is not as bad as Welsh Green Party leader Pippa ‘all old people are racists’ Bartolotti

You Greens really are getting desperate, aren’t you?

      To Mike Evans
I would like to make it clear once and for all that I am not, nor have I ever been, a Property Developer. Nor am I a millionaire. I do not own any properties in Brussels. The only property that my wife and I own is the one that we live in in Brighton ( and the bank still owns part of that).
You have been misinformed and I would be grateful if you did not spread this misinformation again.

when a ‘new’ political party uses the colors of the ‘palestinian flag’ one has to worry about their agenda….

seems like another cloaked anti semite group, typical of the loony supporters of fundementalist groups that live in the republik of Brightonia…

@Hymie You are correct; and the fact that many of the Green Councils ‘awkward squad’ (Ben Duncan, Phelim ‘Dirty Boy’ McCafferty, Alex Phillips) have endorsed Left Unity gives you some idea as to what their agenda will be…
