Brighton Argus newspaper sales fall to record low

Sales of The Argus newspaper fell to a record low, according to the latest audited figures.

In the six months to the end of June, the Brighton newspaper’s circulation fell 13.6 per cent to an average of 14,370 copies a day. It is based in Crowhurst Road, Hollingbury.

And the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) figures, published on Wednesday (27 August), showed a daily sale of 13,746 in June, the lowest monthly figure to have been recorded.

The Brighton and Hove Independent – a rival to The Argus – published the ABC figures today (Friday 29 August) and said: “On average, the daily circulation of The Argus across East Sussex, West Sussex, and Brighton and Hove was just 14,370 in the first half of the year. It is estimated it sells only 4,600 copies within the city.

“The sharp fall could have been worse. Previous six-monthly falls were 21.1 per cent and 25.8 per cent.

“The disclosure of the newspaper’s continuing decline comes after the Advertising Standards Authority found it guilty of misleading advertisers by publishing an unsubstantiated claim that its audience had increased by 24.6 per cent.”

The free Independent said that it was now distributing 14,000 copies a week – and all of them within Brighton and Hove.

What do they expect when they have an editor that doesn’t even bother to reply to emails . I noticed that one of their reporters was not very complimentary to the new TV Station surely they should be more worried about what is happening in their own backyard before criticising others.

Sad news, we need a good daily paper. I think their move towards the Daily Mail Biew of the world also lost them a big chunk of readership.

What I think they should do first off is to build up events in the paper with sufficient time to plan. Often, you read about events that were not published or learn about them the day before. There is so much going on in this city and to be able to use the Argus to plan ahead would be a reason for purchase.

I’ve recently found this website, it’s much better than The Argus. It would be a shame to see it go though, even if I did stop buying at a long time ago. Their website is very poor, and frequented by morons.

I buy it to support itm though online is convenient. having a local paper is important. It needs to find a formula which will grab attention in terms of what’s important for local people. Some good columnists like Adam Trimingham would be good …… interesting insights to the place where we live ….. and a big, extensive thriving forum for local opinion might attract sales. It would be tragic to lose such an institution though. Tabloidisation doesn’t seem to have worked. It should have desirability ….. so people want to possess it.

I have had the Argus delivered to my house for 48 years, however, I think that the last price rise was a complete ripoff, the Argus now costs more than my Saturday and Sunday Express, which incidentally has at least four times as many pages than the Argus, I have for a while seriously considered cancelling the Argus as it has become not worth the money. If the price was reduced, the lost readers would return.
