A Brighton man has been charged after a brutal attack left a 20-year-old man in a critically condition in hospital with serious head injuries.

Benjamin Watkinson, 22, of Stanford Road, Brighton, and Alfie Robinson, 22, of Chanctonbury Road, Burgess Hill, have been charged with two counts of assault.

Sussex Police said that they were arrested and charged after an attack in Burgess Hill at about 3.15am last Sunday (28 June).

It happened during an argument with two other men at the junction of Mill Road with Millers Way.

A 24-year-old man suffered minor facial injuries and was treated in hospital but released later, Sussex Police said.

A 20-year-old man suffered serious head injuries and is now in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

Watkinson and Robinson were both remanded in custody to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court.

Police are still keen to find people who were in the area at the time.

Detective Sergeant Pete Yarrow said: “We need to speak to anyone who was in or around Mill Road in the early hours of Sunday morning and saw or heard anything suspicious.

“The incident has left one of the victims with very serious injuries and we need the help of the community to piece together exactly what happened.

“If you have any information at all, please contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
