A Brighton man spotted drink driving by police abandoned his car and tried to walk home to avoid being caught in the act.

Mark Griffin, 27, was seen by police driving his Vauxhall Astra at speed in Wilson Avenue, Brighton.

But when he saw them turn their car around to pursue him, he sped away and parked in nearby Swanborough Drive, then carried on his way home on foot.

However, his cunning plan failed when officers managed to track him down anyway.

The driver was slurring his words and admitted he had been driving home but said he had decided to park his car and walk after he saw the police patrol.

He had 49 millilitres of alcohol per 100 millilitres of alcohol in his breath.

Griffin, of Robin Davis Close, Brighton, pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 1 July.

He was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £300 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
