Two spells of heavy rain to mark the start of the summer holidays

A severe weather warning is in place as more than an inch and a half of rain is forecast to fall on Brighton and Hove in the next few days – and it’s going to be windy too.

Weather warningThe start of the summer holidays will be marked with more than 20mm falling in a matter of hours tomorrow evening (Friday 24 July).

And although the temperature is forecast to be 14C (57F), wind speeds of more than 20mph and gusts of up to 50mph will make it seem cooler.

After a largely dry Saturday, the weather pattern looks likely to be repeated on Sunday with, again, about three quarters of an inch of rain forecast during the afternoon and evening.

The temperature and wind speeds are expected to be similar.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for both wind and rain for Friday, from midday until 9am on Saturday.

It says: “An area of rain and strong to gale force winds is expected to cross much of southern England before clearing to the east on Saturday morning.

“There is a low likelihood that the system could be intense enough to bring disruptive wind and rain to some parts. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption particularly for those engaged in outdoor activities.”
