Barclays to close third bank branch in Brighton and Hove

Barclays is to close another branch in Brighton and Hove – the third to shut in less than a year.

The bank wrote to customers of the Hangleton branch at the end of last month to say that it would shut its doors for the last time in October.

The Preston Circus branch in Brighton closed earlier this year and the branch in Boundary Road, Hove, closed last November.

Will Dixon, Barclays community leader for Sussex, said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices.

“We must therefore evolve the shape and size of our branch network in response to changing customer behaviour.

Logo Barclays“On (Friday) 9 October we will be closing our branch at 218 Hangleton Road, Hangleton.

“Our records show that since 2008 the overall use of this branch has fallen by almost 60 per cent and that around 70 per cent of our customers are already using other nearby branches.

“This means that following closure, our nearest branch will be in Hove at 149 Church Road, open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm.

“Everyday transactions, typically carried out over branch counters (including paying in a cheque or depositing cash), can also be completed at the nearby post office, located at 5 The Parade, Hangleton Road.

“Customers that currently use the branch will not need to take any action as all account details, sort code, account number and direct debits will remain the same.

“If a customer is registered for Barclays mobile banking, online banking and telephone banking, they are also exactly the same and customers can carry on using existing cards, PIN (personal identification number) and chequebooks as normal.

“Our colleagues at the branch have been consulted about the change and will be given the opportunity to work at a nearby branch.

“We hope that the availability of nearby branches, access to services at the local post office and our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers as we move out of the Hangleton branch.

“We do not take the decision to close any branch lightly and we are committed to adhering to the new UK government protocol on branch closures.

“All of our customers will receive a letter, posters are displayed in branch and colleagues will be on hand to assist customers with any concerns they may have.

“We are proactively engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally before the branch closes on Friday 9 October 2015.”

The Hangleton branch was listed in the Mail on Sunday yesterday (Sunday 26 July) as one of 78 Barclays branches scheduled for closure between now and the end of the year.

The newspaper said that 40 Barclays branches had already closed this year in addition to 89 last year.
