The A-level pass rate has improved in Brighton and Hove for the fourth year running.
Brighton and Hove City Council said that the early results indicated that a number of schools and colleges had achieved their best ever results.
The council said: “Provisional results suggest that the city has outperformed the national average by almost six percentage points, with 59.2 per cent of A-level entries achieving A* to B grades.
“This figure is also nearly six percentage points above last year’s total of 53.5 per cent.
“The overall pass rate for A-levels in the city this year is 98 per cent.”
Councillor Tom Bewick, chairman of the council’s Children and Young People Committee, said: “This year’s improvements are great news for our students and their families.
“However, there’s no room for complacency. Competition for jobs and university places is intense and we need our young people to be as well prepared for these challenges as possible.
“We will be focusing on helping our schools and colleges deliver further improvements in the coming years.”
About 1,500 students sat A levels at the two main sixth form colleges in Brighton and Hove.
More than 1,000 students at Brighton, Hove and Sussex VI Form College (BHASVIC) celebrated A-level success this morning (Thursday 13 August).
The college recorded a 98 per cent pass rate with almost two thirds of the grades being A* to B.
Varndean College said that 460 students sat at least one A level and the overall pass rate was 98 per cent, with 52 per cent achieving A* to B grades.
