The family of pilot Andy Hill, who is in a coma after he crashed at the Shoreham airshow on Saturday, have spoken of their sadness and devastation.

They issued a statement which said: “Following the tragic events at the Shoreham airshow on Saturday, the pilot’s family are devastated and deeply saddened for the loss of life and they send their prayers and heartfelt condolences to the families of all those affected at this difficult time.

“Andrew Hill remains in a critical condition. He has multiple injuries and is in a medically induced coma.

“His family pay tribute to the emergency services for their highly professional response following the accident and to the medical team at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for the care they are continuing to provide to Andrew.”

Mr Hill is reported to be a British Airways Airbus captain and former RAF pilot who flew Harriers and also worked as an instructor.

At least 11 people are feared to have died after the Hawker Hunter that he was flying crashed into cars on the A27 after failing to pull out of a loop.

The aircraft is being taken to Farnborough today (Monday 24 August) for detailed examination by accident investigators.

Sussex Police said: “The crane lifting the plane will be leaving the site and going westwards and is expected to go to Farnborough in Hampshire for the plane to be examined by the AAIB (Air Accidents Investigation Branch).”

Thanks to all the reporters working flat out to provide information. My brain is doing overtime in its need to understand and my heart aches for everyone involved/caught up in this – including the accident site teams.

Tears, tears and more tears just keep springing out.
