Patcham and Portslade are in flood alert after the recent heavy rainfall.

Brighton and Hove City Council said yesterday (Monday 11 January): “The ground water level in Patcham has risen past the 39.35mAOD (above ordnance datum) level.

“Today’s rainfall is likely to affect the ground water level around Tuesday or Wednesday.

“The amount of rainfall will affect how quickly the groundwater rises.

“At the current rate of rise we expect the flood alert trigger level (40mAOD) could be reached on Tuesday morning (12 January).

“At this point, we will start issuing advice to residents in the affected areas.

“However, flooding doesn’t normally happen in the area until the level reaches 45mAOD.

“We will continue to closely monitor the ground water levels in Patcham and Portslade and work with the Environment Agency, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Southern Water.

“If water levels do rise again, support will be provided to residents in affected properties.

“Anyone in the area in need of more information can also email the council team on epu@brighton-hove.gov.uk.”

The council said that it would answer emails will be answered as soon as possible.

The council added: “Please ensure you are aware of the situation by checking the Environment Agency and Brighton and Hove City Council websites. You will be advised if the situation requires you to take further action.

“You can call our environment contact centre during office hours, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm, on 01273 292929.

“Outside of these hours you can call their out-of-hours emergency number on 01273 292229.”
