Brighton and Hove City Council appoints new finance chief

David Kuenssberg

Brighton and Hove City Council has chosen a new finance chief just over a year after the post became vacant.

David Kuenssberg, 44, a senior civil servant from Hove, will start in the £115,000-a-year post on Monday 4 April.

He replaces Catherine Vaughan who left to become finance director of the Land Registry in December 2014.

Mr Kuenssberg, the older brother of BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg, was chosen by a cross-party panel of councillors and council chief executive Geoff Raw.

He will take over from acting finance director Nigel Manville. Mr Manville stepped up temporarily after an interim finance director, Rachel Musson, left last month after just over a year to have a baby.

The council said: “Brighton and Hove City Council has named its new executive director finance and resourcing as David Kuenssberg.

“A  cross-party panel of councillors and Geoff Raw, chief executive, made the appointment following a rigorous interview process.

“David joins the council from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) where he is deputy finance director.

“He has over 20 years’ experience in financial management, having worked at English Heritage and he started his career with PwC.”

Councillor Les Hamilton, lead member for finance and resources, said: “We are delighted that David will be joining the council’s executive leadership team.

“He brings a wealth of experience from different fields and is joining the council when sound financial management is more important than ever.”

Mr Kuenssberg said: “I’m very excited to be joining Brighton and Hove City Council and am looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to apply my skills and experience to make a real impact. I am passionate about the city and its future, having lived here for eight years.”

Mr Kuenssberg, 44, lives in Hove with his wife and two young children. He will take up the position on 4 April 2016.
