Fire crews cut a man out of a taxi in the early hours of this morning (Friday 19 February) after the cab crashed with a car at a crossroads in Brighton.

The car, a blue BMW M4, crashed into the taxi just before midnight in Montpelier Road on the corner of Sillwood Street – outside the Lion and Lobster pub.

The 22-year-old Brighton man who was driving the BMW was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for minor head injuries and later released.

Six fire engines were sent to the scene by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service which said that it was called out at just past midnight.

The fire service added: “Crews cut one casualty free from the wreckage who was then left in the care of paramedics.

“Six appliances were mobilised including the technical rescue units from Lewes and Battle.”

South East Coast Ambulance Service was called out just before midnight. It said: “Ambulance crews in a car and an ambulance attended the scene.

“One patient, suffering from neck pain, was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital.”

Two women passengers in the BMW, both from Brighton and Hove, were unhurt although the crash damaged five parked cars.

Sussex Police said: “A 56-year-old man from Brighton, who was driving the taxi, a green and white Citroen Berlingo, also escaped injury.

“The parked cars that were damaged were a Vauxhall Corsa, a Ford Fiesta, a Fiat Punto, a Ford Focus and a Volkswagen Golf.”

Earlier a fire engine was sent from Hove to Lancaster Court, in Kingsway. Firefighters isolated a leak which was affecting the electrics at the seafront property.

Shortly after 5.20am this morning two appliances were sent from Preston Circus to Upper Lewes Road, Brighton, after reports of a fire in an electrical socket and cavity. Firefighters used a Bosch saw and a CO2 extinguisher at the incident.
