The mayor of Brighton and Hove encouraged people to sign up for Martlets Midnight Walk at Hove Carnival yesterday (Monday 30 May).

The carnival, held in Hove Park and organised by the Martlets Hospice, raised thousands of pounds for good causes, especially the hospice, in Wayfield Avenue, Hove.

The mayor, Councillor Pete West, wrote on Facebook: “Really fun afternoon at Hove Carnival organised by the Martlets Hospice. They kept me busy collecting a couple of kilos of loose change and visiting the stalls.

“There were all sorts of things going on: tombola, fun fair, games, road train, donkey rides, lots of food and arena acts.

“It was great to meet members of Rotary Club of Brighton UK who support disaster relief Shelter Box UK.

“Each Shelter Box provides a tent and essentials for a family of six and there are 10,000 units now positioned around the world, ready for use.

“I was also delighted to meet my friend Kirsty’s mum Pam, who on this her 28th year at the carnival brought five car-loads of plants, all grown at home, and pretty much sold the lot. Well done, Pam!

“And thanks too to Brighton Lions Club for letting me pour a pint of Harveys (for sale of course).”
