Four held over murder of Brighton man

Four people have been arrested by police investigating the murder of a 39-year-old Brighton man.

All four are being held on suspicion of murder after being taken into custody at the weekend.

Post-mortem tests carried out at the Royal Sussex County Hospital yesterday evening indicated that the victim died from head injuries.

His body was found on the fourth floor of a house in Russell Square, Brighton, late on Saturday afternoon.

Officers called at the property on Thursday and went inside to speak to the occupants.

They returned at about 5pm on Saturday and were invited inside where they found the body in a fourth floor room.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Sloan, of the Sussex Police Major Crime Branch, said: “The body was not seen in the house when police visited on Thursday, which has helped focus the investigation on what happened there on Friday and Saturday.

“I’m confident people who have visited or stayed at the house in the last few days and those who live near by will hold the key to unravelling exactly what has happened.

“We are also thoroughly searching through CCTV footage from nearby shopping areas and carrying out extensive house-to-house inquiries to further clarify events.

“Neighbourhood officers have built up good relationships with people in the nearby area, both those living in residential properties and those of no fixed abode.

“They will be out and about seeking information that could assist.

“This was a violent murder of a man who deserves justice and I would urge anyone who knows anything about his death to help us do this.”

A 40-year-old man was arrested at about 5pm on Saturday, a 28-year-old man was arrested at about 1am yesterday, a 27-year-old man was arrested at 12.20pm yesterday and another 27-year-old man was arrested at 1pm yesterday.

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
