Crash closes A23 on the edge of Brighton just before rush hour

A four-car crash led to the closure of the main A259 seafront road at Roedean for about 90 minutes this morning (Tuesday 28 March).

Ambulance crews were called to assess and treat people’s injuries.

The accident happened shortly after 6.30am by the corner of Greenways and Marine Drive, with one lane in each direction reopened shortly after 8am.

Long queues of traffic were reported, back to Peacehaven from the east, affecting thousands of drivers.

Sussex Police said: “Emergency services are at the scene of a four-vehicle collision on the A259 Marine Drive which happened at 6.36am this morning. Some of those involved have suffered injuries

“The road was closed in both directions but reopened shortly after 8am.”

A fire service spokeswoman said: “At 6.54am, a fire engine from Roedean and a fire engine from Preston Circus attended Marine Parade Brighton. There had been a road traffic collision involving four cars. They made the vehicles safe and helped with first aid.

“Traffic was diverted via Woodingdean and Wilson Avenue, Whitehawk, while paramedics and rescue crews helped those at the scene.”

A spokeswoman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 6.37 hrs today reporting a collision on Marine Drive, near the Roedean school.

“Four ambulances were required to take four patients to the Royal Sussex County. All patients were conscious.

“One of the drivers, a man in his 40s, suffered arm, leg and pelvic injuries and a woman in her 30s suffered potential back injuries.

“Another man in his 20s sustained a foot injury and a woman passenger a head injury.”

One online traffic service said: “A259 Marine Drive both ways blocked, queueing traffic due to accident between Greenways and B2118 Roedean Way. Near to Roedean School. Reports of between two and four vehicles involved. Police and ambulance on scene.”

Good morning! Lovely day but sadly a big accident at #Roedean means the 52 is subject to delays, sorry 🙁 #Brighton

⚠️ Due to an RTC near Roedean School, all #BH12 services are currently diverting via Woodingdean and Falmer Road. Apologies. ⚠️

Huge delays. One of the vehicles caught fire. All buses heading Westward are diverting North at Greenways Roundabout to circumvent the standing traffic.
