The man had become trapped in the ironwork under the pier after climbing it, and was sliding down the structure about 30ft above the water.

Newhaven Coastguard said: The casualty was losing grip and slowly sliding down. Brighton Lifeboat managed to manoeuvre beneath the casualty in shallow water and choppy conditions and the casualty was taken aboard the Lifeboat. One the casualty was safe all teams stood down.”

The fire service said: “At 03:33am on 12 November, crews from Roedean and Lewes assisted police at Brighton Pier, Brighton after a person had become trapped in the structure under the pier. Crews liaised with the police and coastguard and provided assistance with direct access and lighting.”

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: “SECAmb was called shortly after 4am to reports a man had climbed up onto the underneath of Brighton Pier.

“An ambulance crew attended the scene along with an ambulance car and they were joined at the scene by our Hazardous Area Response Team. The patient was assessed at the scene before being taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital.”

Brighton RNLI tweeted “Launched at 03.47am to a despondent male at Brighton Pier. Multi agency response. Resolved after negotiations, with male landed to boathouse.”
