Crashes, floods, bin fires and trapped birds keep Brighton firefighters busy

A busy weekend saw Brighton and Hove firefighters rescue someone trapped in a car – and a pigeon trapped in netting.

Crews from Roedean and Brighton were called to a two car crash on Warren Road in Woodingdean at 3.10pm on Saturday. They released one person from the wreckage and made the scene safe.

Roads were closed for some time while they worked, with diversions put in place.

South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended. A spokesman said: “Ambulance crews in two cars and an ambulance attended the scene and one woman was assessed and treated before being taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital.”

Earlier that day, at 11.29am, firefighters were called to the Open Market in Brighton where a bird had become trapped in netting.

Firefighters used a 10.5m ladder to reach the bird and release it.

Other callouts across the weekend included flooding at a house in Overhill Gardens in Brighton at 12.12pm on Saturday, and a motorbike fire on Chailey Road at 9.48pm. A crew from Brighton used a hose reel jet to extinguish the motorbike fire.

On Sunday, firefighters from Brighton attended an RTC on Lewes Crescent, Brighton after being called out at 2.23pm. Firefighters made the vehicle safe.

And at 4pm, firefighters from Brighton put out a bin fire on Western Road, Brighton with a hose reel jet.
