Brighton Fringe Reviews: The Sweet Release

The Sweet Release – Sweet Productions. Sweet Werks 1, Werks Central 4, 5, 11, 12 May

The first night for The Sweet Release was last night and although playing to a select small audience, this was a really unexpectedly funny late night revue.

Ali Macpherson opened with an amusing and upbeat conversational comedy act, following by left-field comic William Stone (aka William 6.5 kilos) who was very droll and kept us laughing at his non sequiters – Another word for a stepdad? Faux pas! Performing in Pals at the Black Dove with co-performer Simone Belshaw, you can see a longer version of his patter there.

The enthusiastic compere with a Lancastrian background moved the show on to performance duo (plus guitarist) Do The Thing: The Two Man Made-Up Musical. This proved to be an unexpected musical comedy improve celebrating the rise of the ‘non-descript northern town’ with one of the Hairy Bikers’ doppelgängers on stage and a scenario involving a wizard (‘or is it a child?!’), some word play on banjaxed and a witty reference to that ‘ancient scroll – the phone book’. It was delightful!

This team are also performing their dedicated show at other venues in full on two other fringe dates.

The event finished with James Macdonald, serenading us with his green guitar with a chirpy song about the economy, a nifty trick of seamlessly tuning his guitar while bashing out ‘Wannabee’ by Spice Girls and the odd amusing throwaway line – ‘Almond Milk, / I didn’t even know nuts had tits!’

Announcing himself as available on Tinder, he closed the show with his ‘Employee of the Month’ song and an unexpected ending!

He’ll be performing this month at the Caxton Arms with Ben Carter in the How to Approach People and Make Friends show.

I probably wouldn’t have made it over to this venue if I hadn’t had the heads up about this show. I hadn’t realised it was a performance space but I’m very glad I did.

This was a little gem of a show and it really made me chuckle.

With new and established acts and local and international performers heating up our evenings, as well as theme nights galore, ‘The Sweet Release’ is the place to go after hours at the Fringe.

Glad you enjoyed the night. First rule of self promotion: always state your name when your performing! Ha, ha! I was the compere and my name is Simon Topping, just by the by.

I thought all the acts were really top draw.
