A man was rescued after jumping from the bottom of the Palace Pier last night.

Brighton RNLI was on exercise when it was diverted to the man who was climbing on the girders underneath the pier at 8.50pm.

Shortly after 9pm, he fell into the water, and Shoreham Coastguard Team were also called in to help.

The man was recovered by the lifeboat and taken to the boathouse where he was passed to the care of paramedics, who assessed him and took him to hospital.

Shoreham Coastguard said: “Shoreham Coastguard Team tasked yesterday evening with RNLI Brighton to report of male in difficulties in the water in Brighton.

“Casualty recovered by lifeboat and taken to boathouse. South East Coast Ambulance and Brighton and Hove Police also on scene.”

A police spokesman said: “Police, coastguards and a RNLI inshore lifeboat crew attended Palace Pier, Brighton, at 8.45pm on Tuesday (22 May) after a man was reported to be climbing on girders under the main decking and heading away from the beach.

“At around 9.10pm he fell into the sea but was brought ashore by coastguard and lifeboat personnel.

“He was treated for exposure at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and later detained under the Mental Health Act.”

A spokesman for Secamb said: “We were called at approximately 9.15pm last night to Brighton Marina where a patient, who reportedly fell from the pier was brought to safety by the RNLI.

“The patient was assessed and treated by ambulance crews before being taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital.”
