It has been quite hectic since the start of the new year and, following on from the excesses of the holiday period, I determined to increase the frequency of my yoga practice and generally exercise “a bit more’”.
So, the news that taking part in physical activity is known to give you more energy, and that dancing and swimming come out top, was no great surprise.
But when I read that going to the library was almost as beneficial, I almost choked on my low-calorie muesli.
I re-read the article and – yes – it appears that heading to your local library can do you a lot of good and has a big effect in increasing “life satisfaction” scores and thus benefits your overall wellbeing as much as exercise.
The idea that reading is “exercise for your brain” was also very welcome for me personally. I became an avid reader after my early promise at both rugby and cricket at a competitive level was cut short when a dodgy knee let me down at an early age.
In fact, I really must show this evidence to my Labour colleagues who have, in recent years, proposed closing the Hove Carnegie Library!
