The Seagulls are into the last 16 of the FA Cup after finally overcoming Championship side West Brom.

Albion missed a host of first-half chances, including Leon Balogun hitting the bar with a header from an Anthony Knockaert corner. Knockaert also set up a couple efforts that Florin Andone put narrowly wide.

Earlier in the half Jay Rodriguez had tested Seagulls keeper David Button.

In the second half the Seagulls were again on top with Andone and Ali Jahanbakash having good opportunities to put the Seagulls in front.

West Brom did little trouble the Seagulls defence, but with 11 minutes left a harmless looking corner found its way through to Kyle Bartley almost standing on the goal line behind the post. He hooked in the opening goal of the tie, from less than a yard out.

Balogun had stood motionless and appeared to think the ball had gone out of play.

The Seagulls were back in it within four minutes as Andone, latching on to a loose ball, scored the Seagulls’ first goal live on BBC1 since Gary Stevens on Saturday 21 May 1983.

Both teams had chances to win the tie in normal time but it was two substitutes who helped the Seagulls to win it in extra time.

Jurgen Locadia tenaciously chased down a loose ball and from a tight angle got a cross shot in that fellow sub Glenn Murray bundled in with his midriff to put the Seagulls 2-1 up.

Tosin Adarabiyo had a great chance to equalise for West Brom but couldn’t get any purchase on his header from six yards out and Button gratefully smothered the ball.

Then it was Glenn Murray again, who after picking up a rebound from a Davy Propper shot, fired high into the net past Jonathan Bond to put the Seagulls 3-1 in front and on to a home tie at the Amex, hosting Derby County on Saturday 16 February.

Before then, on Saturday 9 February, the Seagulls play Burnley at the Amex in a crucial Premier League fixture.
