BACA principal praises sixth form success stories

Fatima Hussain with Bob Speight

The principal of the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) has praised students at the Falmer school for their sixth form results.

Fatima Hussain with Bob Speight

Bob Speight said: “Our students and staff should be really proud of the results that have been achieved.

“We have a very exciting, distinctive and growing post-16 offer at BACA and significant year-on-year improvements in outcomes.

“These young people have made the most of all the opportunities on offer and done themselves and BACA College proud.”

The school said that the year 13 students all passed their “Level 3” courses, adding: “Performance in BTEC courses was exceptional, with a 100 per cent pass rate for the fifth year in succession and students achieving an average grade of Distinction across all courses.

“Students performed exceptionally well in sports science, in which 71 per cent achieved the top Distinction* grade, and creative media, in which 100 per cent of entries achieved Merits and above, including 42 per cent at Distinction or Distinction*.

“BACA’s first Level 3 construction cohort achieved a very impressive 100 per cent pass rate and are progressing to apprenticeships or full-time employment.

“The first cohort of music and drama students, following courses delivered in conjunction with our partners BIMM and BRICTT, also secured impressive outcomes, with 92 per cent of entries securing Merit and above and 59 per cent Distinction.

“Other highlights include A-level art and photography.

“All BACA College students achieved the grades they needed to pursue their chosen destination, whether further study, employment or an apprenticeship.

“BACA College students are choosing from offers at universities in Australia and the United States, as well as at Durham, Sussex, Chichester, Brighton, Bath and Exeter universities.”

Tom McCreadie

The school said that the top performers included Aldridge Cricket Academy graduate Tom McCreadie who achieved triple Distinction* in sport and sports science to secure his place at Durham University.

He said: “I’m feeling really good about my results. They were worth all of the hard work. To get top grades you have to get high marks consistently throughout the course. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and very excited to be going to Durham University.”

He plans to study sport and exercise science and wants to work supporting professional sports teams after his degree.

Fatima Hussain, who achieved Distinction* in creative media and a Distinction in entrepreneurship and is going on to study law at Sussex University.

She said: “I’m really happy with my results and particularly proud of my creative media grade.”

She aims to become a barrister following university.

Charlie Belcher, who achieved B grades in A-Level art and photography and a Distinction in creative media is due to join the art foundation course at the Greater Brighton Metropolitan College – also known as the Brighton Met.

He said: “I worked really hard to make sure my photographic work was the best it could possibly be and I’m really happy that effort has paid off. After my foundation course I’m aiming to go to university, still studying a creative subject.”
