Hove greengrocer's friends to hold fundraising quiz for memorial

Friends of the late Hove greengrocer Tony Magdi are holding a quiz night to raise funds for a memorial.

The quiz will be held at the Westbourne pub in Portland Road, Hove, yards from where Mr Magdi lived and worked.

It will take place a week tomorrow (Thursday 27 January) from 8pm.

Call 01273 823633 to book a table at the quiz which has been organised by Graham Tullet.

About a dozen of Mr Magdi’s friends and neighbours, including local traders, met at the Westbourne on Saturday (15 January) to discuss how best to commemorate his life.

Mr Magdi’s friends George and Liz Jeha, from Canada, took part in the meeting by Skype.

They have posted details of the meeting on the blog that they have been writing since Mr Magdi was attacked in early November.

He died three weeks later without having regained consciousness.

One idea to come out of the meeting was to find out whether Brighton and Hove Buses would name a bus after Mr Magdi.

Councillor Brian Oxley, who represents Westbourne on Brighton and Hove City Council, has written to bus company managing director Roger French to raise the idea.

A further meeting about the memorial fund is due to take place at the Westbourne pub at 1pm on Saturday 5 February.

* Paul Lambeth, 35, of Stafford Road, Brighton, has been charged with the manslaughter of Mr Magdi and is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Friday 11 March for a plea and case management hearing.

Just to add: The letter to Roger French (very promptly raised by Cllr Oxley)flowed from a suggestion made to both Cllr Oxley and saveHOVE by local resident, Vee Walton.

The letter prepared by Cllr Oxley went round the table for co-signing by all of us attending the organising meeting. Not all got round to signing it, but I signed on behalf of saveHOVE and we added the names of Tony’s cousin Morris Markous & his friends George Jeha and Elizabeth Collis as well as Vee Walton.
