Hove park rapist jailed for 18 years

The man who raped an A-level student in a park in Hove has been jailed for 18 years.

Michal Tejkowski, 27, a warehouseman, formerly of West Hill Street, Brighton, followed the 17-year-old girl as she walked home after a night out in Brighton on Valentine’s Day.

He dragged the girl into Dyke Road Park in Hove where he raped her twice.

Tejkowski was also convicted of two other counts of rape in Brighton. He raped a 25-year-old prostitute in the car park of the Western Road branch of Waitrose on Friday 11 March.

He also sexually assaulted a 67-year-old woman in a park in Maidstone, Kent, on the afternoon of Friday 6 May.

He was arrested on the same day with DNA evidence linking him to the attacks on all three women.

After his two-week trial at Lewes Crown Court, Judge Simon Coltart described him as a “thoroughly dangerous man who had shown not a shred of remorse or human compassion towards his victims and that if he ever wanted to know why he received this sentence he should read his victim’s impact statements”.

Detective Chief Inspector Trevor Bowles, who led the investigation to catch Tejkowski, said: “I am very pleased that justice has been served against this dangerous man.

“The threat he poses to women is considerable. He has shown no remorse or concern for his victims throughout his trial.

“Tejkowski’s crimes against these three women were appalling.

“All three victims showed immense courage and strength throughout the police investigation and during the trial.

“My team and I have been humbled by their courage and strength in giving evidence against their attacker, a predatory rapist.

“This has been a long and complicated investigation which involved extensive forensic analysis and important cross-border work with our colleagues in Kent.

“I would like to thank our lead counsel, Richard Barton, and the Crown Prosecution Service who have worked tirelessly to ensure that this man is locked away for a long time.

“The transmission of the BBC Crimewatch reconstruction on May 24 this year was a key milestone in the inquiry and I am hugely grateful to the BBC team who worked with us and with such precision and detail.

“I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to the public for their fantastic assistance with all our appeals for information.

“And finally, I recognise my own investigation team, their dedication to support the victims and to track down the offender has been absolutely outstanding.”

Tejkowski, who comes from Poland, moved to the area last year and worked in a fast food bar before moving with his wife and daughter to Enterprise Road, Maidstone.

Judge Coltart said that he would be on the sex offenders register for life.

The judge commended the Tesco Express member of staff who helped Tejkowski’s teenage victim when she ran into the store after being attacked in the early hours of Tuesday 15 February.

He also commended PC Thomas Mepstead. The Kent officer rang Sussex Police after watching the reconstruction on BBC Crimewatch. He identified similarities linking the Brighton attack to the one on the 67-year-old Kent woman.
