A 65-year-old Brighton man died last night after being attacked at his home.
A fight broke out after Christopher McLean answered the door of his flat in Caledonian Court, Caledonian Road, Brighton, to two white men at about 8pm.
His partner called an ambulance at about 10pm when Mr McLean, known as Mac, felt unwell. Shortly afterwards he died.
Witnesses have come forward to say that they saw a man running from the block of flats between 8pm and 8.30pm.
Sussex Police said that detectives believed that Mr McLean may have been assaulted at that time, rather than 10pm shortly before the ambulance was called.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick May, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, is leading the investigation.
He said: “A man tragically died after an altercation last night. Following house to house inquiries we believe he answered the door of his home at around 8pm to two men who confronted him.
“They barged into his home and a fight broke out. The motive of the attack is being investigated.
“No weapons were seen and after a short time the men left. One man was seen running through Caledonian Court.
“An ambulance was called at about 10pm as the victim was feeling unwell. He sadly died soon after.”
A post mortem is expected to take place tomorrow to confirm the cause of Mr McLean’s death. At this time we are treating this as a murder inquiry.”
