Detectives are investigating a report that a 19-year-old woman was raped on Brighton beach in the early hours of yesterday morning (7 September).

The woman, who is from Kent, had been out with a friend earlier in the evening but he had gone back to the hotel where they were staying.

She reported that between midnight and 2.30am she was raped somewhere on the beach between the Coalition night club and Regency Square.

The woman was grabbed by two men and raped by them while a third man was present.

She describes the two men who raped her as in their thirties.

Detective Sergeant Graham Lewendon said: “This was a distressing incident for the woman and we are offering her our support.

“We are appealing for any members of the public who can help us trace the offenders.

“We would like to speak to anyone who saw the woman near the Coalition night club or anyone who saw three men acting suspiciously or running away.

“Tonight we are putting extra officers in the area to speak to people and offer them advice and reassurance.

“We will also be seeking any witnesses.

“The investigation is in its early stages and we working with the victim to establish the circumstances of the incident.

“I would encourage anyone who is concerned or has information to speak to officers or contact Sussex Police.

“Brighton and Hove are safe places for people to live and visit but they should always be aware of their personal safety.”

Anyone who has information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
