Woodingdean shopkeeper calls for speed limit to be cut

A shopkeeper urged councillors to cut the speed limit on a main road in Woodingdean during a meeting at Hove Town Hall yesterday (Thursday 24 October).

Gilles Guichard, who runs Johny’s Wares, in Warren Road, Woodingdean, said that the speed limit on the road was 40mph.

At a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council he said that it dropped to 30mph by the Nuffield Hospital and was dangerous.

He said: “Will the council reduce the speed limit on this very busy road from 40mph to 30mph from the top of Elm Grove all the way down to the village?

“When you’re dropping speed limits in the city to 20mph, it doesn’t make sense to allow people to drive into Woodingdean at 40mph.”

Councillor Ian Davey, who speaks on transport matters for the Green administration, said that it was not in his gift.

He said: “It is necessary to carry out detailed analysis.

“A lot of that has been going on in the central city area.

“Warren Road is to be looked at as part of phase three of the 20mph limit project next year.

“Final decisions will be made by the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee.”

I agree – the speed limit should be lowered. This is even more important considering the volume of traffic now passing through Woodingdean as a result of the chaos caused by the Lewes Road bus lane scheme.

    Hello everyone,

I shall not be impressed by the poor answer of Councillor Ian Davey. Members of the elected council, Must Not forget, We the People, the TAXpayers, the Working class. We are the Commander in Chief of this great Nation, Not any elected members.
