Brighton nurses start appeal to help Philippines typhoon disaster appeal

Staff at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton have started an appeal to help people affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

About 120 Filipino nurses work at the Royal Sussex and the other hospitals run by the same trust – the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.

They are keen to help friends and family and others affected by the typhoon. Many have not had any news from home and don’t know whether their relatives are among the victims.

An urgent staff meeting was held yesterday (Wednesday 13 November) to start the appeal and plan support.

The hospital trust said: “There are volunteers in many wards/areas who are happy to accept and co-ordinate donations in any form.

“If you would like to help or donate in any other way, please speak to the reception desk at one of the drop-off points.”

People are being asked to donate

  • Food packs – ready to eat, able to open
  • Spare or unwanted clothes
  • Shoes
  • Toiletries
  • Blankets
  • Candles – as they have no electricity

The main drop-off point at the Royal Sussex is the bed store, behind the Barry Building, although reception has also been accepting donations.
