Train company Southern is being urged to think again about its decision to close the busiest taxi rank in the area whenever Brighton and Hove Albion play evening games.
The Conservative parliamentary candidate for Hove Graham Cox said that the decision was a mistake.
He spoke out after the customer experience manager at Brighton Station emailed cabbies.
The email said that the closures were necessary because of the widely reported problems caused by the new queuing system when implemented for the first game of the season.
Councillor Cox, the Tories’ transport spokesman on Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “This has all the hallmarks of a knee-jerk reaction by Southern which has not been properly thought through.
“It will have a detrimental effect on the travelling public, with commuters having even more of a struggle to get home.
“Taxi drivers pay £470 a year to pick up at the station and to treat them in this high-handed fashion is unfair.
“I am convinced there is plenty of room for a proper queue, without the need to close the rank.
“I urge the railway authorities and British Transport Police to work with the taxi drivers and council transport officers to sort this out before the next home game.”

The way the taxi drivers often behave at Brighton station is a disgrace, looks more like stock car racing half the time. I’d suggest getting them to retake their tests before giving them a license. You know, tiny points of the Highway Code such as ‘what is a speed limit?’ and ‘is it OK to park on pelican crossings?’

Make them retake their tests lol! All they are doing is trying to earn a living its not their fault the design of the new queue was obviously thought up by a brain damaged camel. Along with the new 20 mph Speed limits.

Its such shame the taxi rank wasn’t moved during the station redevelopment, the best they could do now it mark the junction into the station as a no stopping area and enforce it – at least the taxi drivers wouldn’t block the whole area with no regard for any other road users while waiting to get into the station.
