Guerrilla gardeners hit Brighton pavements

A group of guerrilla gardeners have made it their mission to brighten up Brighton pavements by planting flowers underneath roadside trees.

Fiveways guerilla gardeningCommunitree has started in Fiveways with these blooms planted round trees in Stanford Avenue and Rugby Road.

And it is asking for the public’s help in keeping them fresh by watering them, and also adding their own around the city.

The scheme is the work of artist Adam Johnson and graphic designer Dan Mackey. Dan said: “Autumn might be just around the corner, but that just serves as a perfect excuse to inject some colour with flowers into unused public spaces.

“We want to improve small, unused squares underneath trees and transform them into mini garden spaces that make people smile.

“With a little bit of help we can make something awesome.

“Water these thirsty chaps and see the flowers come to life. Add to the patches, make your own, and get involved with your Communitree.”

    Some trees have such a growth of unkempt weeds around them it would be an improvement to have something done with them. It must make life more difficult for dogs though!!

    Those aren’t “unkempt weeds” they’re “wildflower micro-meadows”, a delight for pollinators.

My contribution is under a tree outside 10 Richmond Road, Brighton. Whilst preparing the poor chalk filled soil a neighbour donated a bag of compost and another took the old soil to the tip. The plants were a collection put together to attract pollinators.
