Wide load may delay traffic in Brighton and Hove on Friday

Drivers may face delays on Friday morning (15 May) when a wide load is taken by road from Shoreham to Newhaven with a police escort.

Sussex Police said that delays should be expected as a large vehicle travels across Brighton and Hove.

The force said: “An abnormal load will be escorted by police from Basin Road South in Portslade to North Quay Road in Newhaven, starting its journey at about 9.30am.

“Rolling roadblocks will need to be put in place at stages along its journey so that it can continue along narrow routes, occasionally across both lanes of the carriageway.

“The vehicle may also only travel at a maximum speed of about 30mph which will mean delays to those following behind on the A27 in particular.

“From Basin Road South the lorry will travel along Wharf Road and Kingsway to the B2193 Church Road where it will turn north.

“It will then turn east on to the A270 Old Shoreham Road before heading north on the A293 Hangleton Link Road and then accessing the A27 eastbound.

“The vehicle will then stay on the A27 to the Beddingham roundabout where it will turn south and take the A26 to Newhaven and arrive at its destination around midday.”

Sergeant Dan Pitcher, from the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: “I’d like to apologise in advance for the delays that the vehicle is likely to cause across the county.

“We may have to close some roads for a short time so that the vehicle can use them but we will be working to keep delays to the absolute minimum.

“We understand there is likely to be some disruption but would ask the public for their patience.”

So they are taking something from one port to another by road? Am I missing something here?

It would be even more ironic if the wide load was a boat/ship.
