New deputy chief constable joins Sussex Police

Deputy Chief Constable Bernie O'Reilly

The new deputy chief constable of Sussex started work today (Monday 20 June).

Bernie O’Reilly, 46, has joined Sussex Police from Staffordshire where he has served since becoming a police officer in 1989, most recently as Assistant Chief Constable.

He has wide-ranging experience in operational policing, including divisional command, major crime investigation and strategic firearms.

Mr O’Reilly also headed Staffordshire’s diversity unit and led on the development and training of officers and staff.

He said: “I feel very privileged and excited about my new role in a force that has a fantastic national reputation.

“There are clear priorities to protect the most vulnerable in society, prevent crime, catch criminals, be there when people need us and serve ethically and I’m looking forward to making a significant contribution to those aims.

“Having spent a few days with Sussex Police already, I have been impressed by the attitude and dedication of the staff and officers.

“I look forward to meeting more colleagues, residents, businesses and partners as I get out and about in the coming weeks and months.”

As divisional commander for the north of Staffordshire he was responsible for the policing of Stoke City and Port Vale football clubs but insists that Brighton and Hove Albion’s recent signing of Stoke’s Steve Sidwell is pure coincidence.

Chief Constable Giles York said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Bernie as DCC. He comes with a great reputation, is passionate about policing, has a wealth of operational experience and will bring fresh eyes to the force.

“I’d also like thank Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Robin Smith, who has given everything in the last 30-plus years to his fellow officers, staff and members of the public. He will be taking up the same role in Surrey Police for a period.”

Sussex police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne said: “On behalf of our partners and local residents, I too would like to welcome Bernie to Sussex as our newly appointed deputy chief constable.

“His previous knowledge of diverse communities and clear commitment to successful partnership working will be a great asset for Sussex Police.

“I am really looking forward to working with him for the future benefit of everyone in Sussex.”
