Swimmer dies after getting into trouble by Palace Pier

A swimmer who got into difficulties while swimming in the sea near the Palace Pier has died despite attempts to revive him on the beach.

Ambulance crews gave the 44-year-old man CPR as he lay on the beach, watched by hundreds of horrified tourists on the hottest day of the year, after they were called by a friend of his who was with him.

But despite their best efforts, the man, from south west London, died shortly after arriving at hospital.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “At 8.40pm on Tuesday (19 July) police were called by the ambulance service, who were trying to resuscitate a 44-year old man from south west London who was on the beach near the pier opposite Volks Tavern.

“He had apparently got into difficulties while swimming there and a friend who was with him called the ambulance service.

“The man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital but sadly died there shortly afterwards.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and the coroner’s officer will be continuing inquiries.”

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: “We were called to the beach near the Volks Tavern at approximately 8.20pm last night to reports a man who had been in the sea was in cardiac arrest.

“Ambulance crews in one ambulance and four cars attended the scene. Attempts were made to resuscitate the man. He was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital still in a life-threatening condition.”

In a separate incident, on Monday (18 July) a 36-year-old man from London was rescued from the sea between the piers at about 4.30pm. He was resuscitated before being taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton, where his condition was described as stable.

Seems like your swimmer survived, if it’s the same person.
And that you guys helped? Well done.

Hi Louise, I was on the boat trip too and another article has confirmed he is alive and soon to be realeased from hospital. I asked life guards at the beach late Monday afternoon and they said he had been resuscitated and was doing well

      Hi Louise,
I was just reading the Argus online and it seems the man will be fine. He was taken to hospital and is doing well. It looks like he’ll fully recover. Sounds like everyone did an amazing job & the couple who jumped in to help him were incredibly brave. A happy ending for once! :0)

We spoke to lifeguards on Monday evening before a group of us went swimming. they told us they had just pulled someone out who was floating face down and managed to save them. Sounds like the same person and has a happier ending than expected.
