People could be charged to use 11 public toilets in Brighton and Hove to help pay to clean loos across the city.

A report published today recommends that a 30p charge should be introduced at all the seaside toilets in Brighton and Hove as well as Goldstone Villas and the Royal Pavilion Gardens.

And the same charge to use the West Pier Arches toilet, which has been in place as a trial since 2014, will remain.

Twelve toilets will also be refurbished this winter and next. The list has not been finalised, but the dingy Royal Pavilion Gardens toilets are the top priority.

A report written by Brighton and Hove City Council procurement advisor Jo Yule, which will go before the Policy, Resources and Growth Committee next Thursday (12 July), says: “Anecdotal evidence has indicated that the introduction of charging may also lead to lower levels of anti-social behaviour and result in less vandalism from specific user groups who are less likely to pay to use the toilet.

“This can, in turn, increase the confidence of vulnerable groups to use public toilets.”

The full list of proposed locations is

  • Black Rock
  • Goldstone Villas
  • Hove Lagoon
  • King Alfred
  • King’s Esplanade
  • Lower Promenade East
  • Lower Promenade West
  • Peter Pan
  • Royal Pavilion Gardens
  • The Colonnade
  • West Pier Arches (charging is already in place)
  • Western Esplanade

The move comes in the wake of a new ten-year contract for the upkeep of public toilets being awarded to Healthmatic in May 2017.

As part of the new contract, Healthmatic agreed to spend at least £602,000 on refurbishing Brighton and Hove’s public toilets on top of the council’s investment of £550,000.
