Grubbs in Western Road

Longstanding Brighton burger chain Grubbs is to close three of its four outlets, leaving just the original takeaway in Western Road.

The fast food restaurants were founded more than 40 years ago in 1979 by Tim Davies.

But as he turns 70, he has decided to wind the company down, and only its original Western Road location will remain.

Brighton and Hove News understands the other three in York Place, St James’s Street and Lewes Road may be taken over by another takeaway selling vegan fast food.

Mr Davies, who turns 70 in September, said the last year had been a particularly stressful one, and he had decided to concentrate on his other business, Ticketmedia.

How distressing that – in a year where the vast majority of the competition had to shut their doors – Grubbs couldn’t keep themselves going.
BTW Malaysian is the best burger they do, bar none.

This is rather sad news, many happy memories of getting food from the York Place branch, and how can you not have one on St James Street?

I’ve been making trips to Western road one. Can’t live without a Grubbs!

Very sad to hear the sad news , I’ve been enjoying Grubs burgers for over 35 years and also sad to hear the owners bad circumstances.

Wish him all the best for the future and a big thank you for all the great burgers

Trust me. It’s a good thing. Keep the dedicated Grubbs fans fitter by allowing them to stretch their legs in accordance to their fast food diets.

I’m sure they’d never be sidelined by nearby McDonald’s and alike. X

I used to love Grubb’s in the early days. They had their own unique flavour. The last time I had one about three years ago it tasted like the generic burgers you get in every kebab and chip shop in town.

Thats so sad. I used to work in the St. James street location almost the entire time I lived in Brighton while I was at Uni. 91-95. That job really got me through Uni. Met some awesome people along the way too. Fond Memories.
