Two fishermen had a surprise yesterday when they managed to catch a porbeagle shark just 10 miles off from the Brighton coast.
Skipper Steve Green and crewmate Nick Williams caught the 30lb shark on board the Proteus boat (Brigand Charters) when out fishing for turbot.
After some pictures, the shark was safely returned to the sea.
Mr Williams said: “After eight years of charter fishing in Brighton, this is the first time we have boated a shark.
“We have seen a few, had a few unknown big fish snap offs. This is the first caught and landed on the charter boat in many, many years.
“One of the fisherman’s rods bent right over and immediately snapped the line.
“Then just seconds later the fisherman standing next to him had a massive pull on his line and we saw the fish take his bait right off the surface and then shoot away from the boat.
“This time the fish stayed hooked and the fight began.
“From our experience, our initial thought was that it was a large tope or smooth hound.
“However, as we got it back to the surface we soon realised it was a shark! After a few tense moments of playing the fish, it was in the net and on the boat.
“After a few quick pictures it was safely released back to the sea.”
That’s a baby. Shark are reported Daily along the Sussex coast normally kept under the Radar by Skippers who wamlnt to tip of Regular Anglers who book trip’s in the hope of getting more work. BUT NOW SOME BIG MOUTTH AS OPENED THE BAG IT WILL BE LIKE THE SCEEN FROM JAWS WHERE THEY STRUGGLE TO GET OUT OF THE HARBOUR
I agree with the previous person we saw and avoided sharks back in the seventies and kept our mouths shut
That’s little more than a pup, they are not much smaller when born. However, some idiot has taken a distorted photo to sensationalise the catch. Bigger fish are caught off the beach!
Furthermore, both tope and smoothound are species of shark so yet again, ignorance is emphasising this fish over others to sensationalise the catch. Thank goodness they put it back …oh and how come it took the bait off the surface….I thought Turbot were bottom feeding fish.. or weren’t they fishing for turbot?
Looks exactly like a Greatwhite pup,but then again so do salmon sharks as they are related to greatwhites but they live in Canada I think.
Your man’s biggest catch probably for 8 years and so he should be entitled to show off what his caught.Shark safety returned back to the water good day for him.Get off your keyboards and stop being so negative!

Couple weeks ago I was swimming in Shore-ham and suddenly… I felt my hand when on something cold and sharp under water, and that ‘thing’ was… I felt there is something big next to me! I swim out of water and came back home shaking, ‘I was attacked by shark!’ I called.
No one believed in me, and at the end we just had a lough.
But look what is on the news!
In one place 9 days later it was found a injured wale, and in another beach… small shark.
My story got a reason then! I met one of them and this must mean something. Ups!.. Anyone else experienced it?
Why kill it? Did you eat it?

Sharks are generally harmless in our waters .I have swum with sharks when diving in Med,Red Sea ,Florida and with a solitary Orca off Thurso in the north of Scotland .Don’t dive with open cuts ,or in the case of females do not doso at wrong time of the month .food for sharks is plentiful in British waters an attack is unlikely if you behave calmly and dont thrash around shouting and screaming thus signalling distressor fear.I am 75 and have survived many hours in sea.Have dived with seals,manta rays ,dolphin and porpoises sas well as Whale Sharks.Sharks are in the process of possible extinction and should be left alone.
Didnt mention how many turbot he had lol maybe one like on the french trip he did enough to put anyone off fishing for life as for shark fishing any experienced charter skipper would know where to catch these sharks and two or three a day when in season would be the norm at the mo.
I hope they returned it to the water! It’s not a big deal to catch one! Porbeagle’s are quite common in British waters! They may be a possibility of great white pointers, the larger cousins of the “Porgy” in our waters, along with their other cousin the short fin mako which grow from 6ft to 14ft and blues and threshers. The seas and oceans have no borders other than the ones made by temperature so expect some of these sharks in all our waters and if you don’t want to be on the menu, stay out of the water It’s their home!

I’ve seen fish bigger caught of the local piers you have conger eels 45lb plus of the beach and I’ve seen tope that size don’t know what all the fuss is about to be fair it’s hardly going to hurt anyone and anyone that knows you hold a fish like he is it’s going to look twice the size
