Brighton and Hove elections 2019 – we’ve got it covered

Twenty candidates will battle it out for the three seats in Brighton and Hove at the general election on Thursday 4 July.

Only one of the three MPs who won a seat at the 2019 general election is standing again this time – Peter Kyle for Labour in Hove and Portslade.

Britain’s first and only Green MP, Caroline Lucas, is not running again in Brighton Pavilion while Labour suspended the former Brighton Kemptown MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle.

Here are the candidates by constituency.

In Hove and Portslade, six candidates are vying for the seat.

Sophie Broadbent – Green
Carline Deal – Conservative
Martin Hess – Reform UK
Peter Kyle – Labour
Tanushka Marah – Independent
Michael Wang – Liberal Democrat

In Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, there are also six candidates in the contest.

Valerie Gray – Social Democratic Party
Elaine Hills – Green
Stewart Stone – Liberal Democrat
Khobi Vallis – Conservative
Emma Wall – Independent
Chris Ward – Labour

In Brighton Pavilion, eight candidates have been nominated.

Steve Ai – Independent
Sian Berry – Green
Carl Buckfield – Social Democratic Party
Tom Gray – Labour
Mark Mulvihill – Reform UK
Ashley Ridley – Liberal Democrat
Citizen Skwith – The Official Monster Raving Looney Party
Sarah Webster – Conservative

The election is due to take place on Thursday 4 July, with count to be held at Portslade Sports Centre.

Looks to me like we’ll soon have three local Labour Party MPs.
There’s another month to go, but it’s difficult to see how any of the other parties or individual candidates could build any following in that time.

Sian Berry seems to be very hardworking and dedicated. Tom Gray is just good at turning heel and running away. Sadly he has also proven to be a total hypocrite

So dedicated she got herself elected to the Greater London Assembly then resigned a matter of hours later.

What a terrible shame that there is no Reform UK candidate for the Kemptown/Peacehaven constituency. My son and his wife were keen to vote Reform’ as we’re several friends that live in that constituency’ but have found that there’s no Reform candidate standing. This is thousands of votes absolutely wasted and must be rectified by the next election’ if we manage to survive 5 years of Liebour.

Tom Gray is a new labour drone.

It’s always interesting to see how those commenting here attack the people they don’t like.

So, when you say a candidate is a ‘drone’, you imply they are not from the local area, or that they were not chosen by the local party – or by the local faction who you yourself support.
That term could in fact be applied to almost all of the candidates here – in all three of our constituencies in Brighton and Hove – and maybe that reflects the diversity of the electorate here, and the transient nature of the city.
(I too was NOT born here, but I have lived here since 1974. I am certainly not a drone or a DFL.)

Tom Gray, as an example here, joined the Labour Party when he was 15, and worked as a party volunteer long before he found fame in the Band, Gomez. He’s lived in Brighton since 1999. So what is the problem here, exactly?
I guess by calling someone ‘New Labour’, you mean ‘not a Momentum supporter’ – and, surely, the term New Labour is itself out of date?

The Pavilion (central Brighton) constituency will perhaps be the most hard fought for in our city, in a month’s time. From the 1950s to the 1990s it was a traditional Conservative seat but the electorate has changed a lot since then. David Lepper first won it for the Labour Party in 1997, and it’s hard to see any Tory comeback in this current vote.

Caroline Lucas built a strong following as leader of the Green Party for many years, and as Pavilion MP, she was hard working and popular – and will be a hard act to follow. But the new Green Candidate, Sian Berry, can’t assume she’ll simply take over Caroline’s votes. And indeed the Green party’s reputation in this city was fatally wounded by the recent Green administration in charge of our local council. They half seemed like naive tree huggers, shaking the magic money tree, and with the other fake-green types flying off in jet planes to a Climate Change conferences. .

The current opinion polls suggest a Labour lead, partly because the Tories have messed up so badly in the last ten years, meaning people are ready for a change, but also because Labour no longer seem like a nutjob left wing coalition.
With the Tories in such disarray, you can see how their rightwing vote might go another nut job party, like Reform, if only as a protest vote. Surely, no-one actually wants a self-serving Farage type in charge?
The Lib Dems might also do better in Brighton, gaining protest votes, given their middle of the road opportunism.

Above all, I think the Greens will do badly, and they surely shot themselves in the foot by putting up Elaine Hills (‘Hills of Hanover’) for the Kemp Town seat. Hills, as a local councillor, almost single handedly trashed the Hanover Green vote with her ideology-based, money-wasting, unwanted, and very un-Green LTN scheme.

Labour nationally doing better on polling, but not in Pavilion, with all but one poll I’ve seen showing Sian Berry easily retaining it for the Greens.

Was also weird seeing Tom Gray having an online argument with The Progressive Alliance during the week because he thought they were being unfair about his chances (https://twitter.com/TheProgAlliance/status/1798703461745528917) They ended up saying: “It’s a shame but we’ve been doing this long enough to expect a few PPCs to start getting touchy when it’s clear another party has a better chance. Par for the course, it doesn’t really bother us to be honest.”

Do think Peter K will be a shoe in over in Hove, possibly with a reduced majority because of Gaza and the response / non-response on that. But I have no idea about Kemptown. It should have easily been a Labour seat, but people are rightly peed off with how things have been handled by the party.

Not seen any hustings advertised yet – but will be interesting to hear where candidates really stand on local (and national) issues in person.

        Hmm, pot-kettle-black!
MRP polling, which in recent years has been the most reliable method, suggests the same outcome as 2019. Greens winning Brighton Pavilion, Labour winning Kemp Town and Hove.

So looks like we’ll see Peter Kyle in Hove then, Sian Berry in Pavilion, and who knows who in Kemptown after their candidate dramas. Prob Labour, but they will take a massive hit by being cruel to Lloyd RM in their handling of the situation and their treatment of candidates on the left of their party.

In Pavilion Labour have blown it by putting in a candidate who is not engaging with residents. If I hear him banging on about music rights one more time I think I’ll die of boredom – yes it’s an issue – yes change might be needed – but a candidate lobbying for change on an issue they personally profit from isn’t a good look. Especially if what others say about not responding to email is correct and running away from community groups.

Unless Lloyd has done something completely reprehensible, then Labour have made a huge mistake drafting in Keir’s gambling industry and fossil fuel lobbying mate in Kemptown – could get lively over there!

You might be right, but I’d warn about assuming people will vote on local issues, or in line with local party-political dramas, at a time when it’s a national government election.

The electorate are very capable of tactical voting when they want to see change.

The Greens seem to be having a major leaflet campaign, both by post and flyers hand delivered through the letterbox. I’m getting 2 or 3 per week from them but nothing from anyone else – do they have money to spare or are they getting desperate?

Who on earth would vote for Peter Kyle? He enjoyed Israel’s hospitality when he became the mp for Hove & Portslade and is now the vice chair of Labour friends of isreal. Peter Kyle has not voted for a permanent ceasefire and instead has allowed the continuation of a genocide in Gaza. Peter Kyle supports his leader Keir Starmer 100%. Remember what Keir has said many many many times “Israel has a right to defend itself , no food. Water, gas for Gaza”. In recent weeks Keir said to a reporter ” I have not been able to take the smile of my face since 1st January 2024, knowing that the election would be comming”. The rest of us have nothing to smile about only Tears and more tears for Gaza. Let’s wipe that smile off Keir’s face. NOT ONE VOTE FOR LABOUR.

I won’t be voting for him this time, fine MP that he is, due to his stance on Gaza and his non voting/ abstaining record on all the important votes. Not taking action is being complicit.

I’ll be voting Tanushka Marah in Hove. It’s a relief to have someone I can wholeheartedly support with a clear conscience.

I was a Labour party member from when I was 16 until recently. I can’t vote for this version of Labour, and especially Peter Kyle, who is right in the middle of it all. Hurts to see someone I have voted for in the past supporting their many terrible stances/actions. Not least on Gaza, of course, but also the abandoning of the trade unions, the further dismantling of the NHS, and the fraudulent advertisement of the investment firm they’re trying to pass off as nationalised energy.

    Jon,
I’m not sure if this is a joke or not (this is Brighton after all) but I extracted this from Steve AIs electoral website:
How can AI Steve represent me in Parliament?
Steve Endacott, a Sussex Entrepreneur, has created many of the initial policy ideas and will “physically” attend Parliament to vote on policies as guided by AI
    Steve’s feedback from his constituents.
Although Steve maintains a house in Brighton and will use this when attending Parliament, he now lives in Rochdale with his new wife, restricting his time to talk to his constituents in Brighton and Hove.
AI Steve was created to ensure that the people of Brighton and Hove had 24/7 access to leave opinions and create policies.
Policies for the People by the People!

    Remember…vote Green – get Tory.

That is what happened in the pitifully low turnout for PCC in May and we are stuck with dreadful Tory Katy Bourne for another 4 years……not that she does anything !

That’s not true in Brighton Pavilion – vote Green get Green.

Also prob worth recognising that if you do vote Labour elsewhere, like Kemptown, and you get Labour, under Keir’s “changed” Labour you’re prob getting a Tory in disguise.
