Workers who were sent by Brighton and Hove City Council to remove graffiti from outside Angela Rayner’s seafront flat withdrew after complaints from people living and working in the area.

When the clean up crew turned up this afternoon (Thursday 4 September), they were told that the council wasn’t as quick to deal with other graffiti and vandalism across Brighton and Hove.

Although they left at that point, it is understood that they returned later to complete the job.

Meanwhile, Peter Kyle, the Labour MP for Hove and Portslade, spoke out after the words “bitch” and “tax evader” appeared on a white wall outside the Deputy Prime Minister’s home.

Across the road from her flat, more graffiti appeared on a chipboard hoarding, saying, “Tax evader Rayner” and “Rayner tax avoidance”, after the politician admitted underpaying stamp duty on the property.

Fellow cabinet minister, Mr Kyle, the Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary, said: “I’m really disappointed that the heritage wall has been defaced over this issue. Hove is better than this.

“There are many, many ways people can express their anger and disappointment in Angela Rayner, including reporting her to the Commissioner for Standards. But defacing a wall is not one of those ways.”

Sir Keir Starmer condemned the graffiti outside the Housing Secretary’s home as local residents turned up to see the graffiti this morning, with news about it circulating on social media.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Some of you may have seen the photos of the vandalism of the Deputy Prime Minister’s home this morning.

“The Prime Minister condemns this vandalism in the strongest possible terms.

“Whatever scrutiny our parliamentarians may face, it is appalling that their private homes should be targeted in this way.”

Similar graffiti had also been daubed on the pavement close to the front of the property.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “This vandalism to residents’ homes is totally unjustifiable and beyond the pale.

“Neither Angela nor her neighbours deserve to be subjected to harassment and intimidation.

“It will rightly be a matter for the police to take action as they deem appropriate.”

Sussex Police said: “We have been made aware of graffiti outside an address in Hove.

“The matter is being treated as criminal damage and we are proactively making inquiries to gather information as to the circumstances.

“We will be contacting the homeowner to identify and address any further concerns.

“Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting serial 528 of 04/09.”

I thought that graffiti removal was the responsibility of the owner if it was on private property?

what what theyve daubed is true but i dont agree with there way of doing things…..ange may have keir as her judge but the public are the jury.rayner the evader has been caught red handed its very clear shes an anti taxxer and as such she has to go as shes clearly lying through her teeth and as for bringing her disabled son into it that is truly disgraceful…but i guess we shouldnt be surprised after all there not called liebour for nothing…..surely its time for her and the rest of the sleaze party to be given the order of the boot as the public are fed up to the back teeth with them and demand a general election with that in mind be sure to check out and read carefully a petition on the uk government and parliament petition page call an immediate general election….it currently has 875,462, signatures it urgently needs many more and you can help in getting them first be sure to sign it and most importantly be sure to reshare it widely all over the uk including brighton with as many like minded people as you possibly can and be sure to ask each one of them to do exactly the same as im asking you to do

Did you skip punctuation lessons at school, ‘clive’?
The odd full stop now and again would make this seem slightly less like an unhinged rant.

My issue is that if any other resident contacted the council about graffiti they would be told that is the owners responsibility to clean it up.

Once again we appear to have double standards.

If the council were as quick to clean up other vandalism the city would look a lot better.

Not been my experience at all, and I’ve quite a bit of graffiti cleared up. Although I do agree that a quick turnaround of vandalism does reduce recurrence. It might take a few goes, but they’ll soon get the hint, or get caught.

A city awash with graffiti, and hers gets cleaned up in 24 hours.

This Labour council threatens business owners with fines if they don’t clear graffiti on their buildings (at their own expense). MP’s getting preferential treatment yet again.

Peter Kyle defending her too, don’t turn your back on her mate, she’ll plunge a knife into it as soon as look at you. No doubt has her eye on that lovely safe Labour seat in Hove.

Well, I can guarantee that whatever graffiti you are referring to is not using threatening language towards yourself; otherwise, you’d know that kind of scumbaggery gets removed pretty quickly.

If Peter Kyle suddenly cares about heritage, he’s been very silent about the intended destruction of the Hove Floral Coronation clock after seventy two years gracing Palmeira Square and many city postcards. I seem to remember earlier this year Mr Kyle also threatened to demolish our 1930s King Alfred leisure centre with a hammer from Robert Dyas when all it needs is a good refurbishment and to reopen the bowling alley. Am sure Mrs Rayner’s teenage sons would also appreciate a bowling alley and sizeable leisure centre virtually next door spruced up for them. May we expect to see some council workers starting works on a quick refurb to the King Alfred for Mrs Rayner and her sons this afternoon?

I thought under this new Labour government that spraying graffiti is an act of vandalism worthy of coming under the terrorism act.

It wouldn’t be terrorism if it were aimed at one person in particular.

Yes very strange how quick the graffiti was removed presumably at tax payers expense too. Also police knocking on doors, when people who get burgled are lucky to see a police presence.

Great! Now if anyone wants graffiti on their properties promptly painted over, just spray an anti labour slogan or a cross of St George over it! Hey presto, it will be gone in 24hrs. Great work from the council!!
In fact you could probably get your whole house repainted with this new council scheme!

You joke, I’ve heard of someone who did something similar to this, and ended up breaking their probationary tenancy. Was not their finest hour.
