Snow and sleet fall over Brighton

Snow and sleet fall over Brighton

Snow and sleet has reported in Saltdean and central Brighton today (Wednesday 19 November) as temperatures tumbled further.

The first flurries were reported at about 9am although none appeared to have settled.

Outside Brighton, snow was reported in Storrington, Horsham, Haywards Heath and Eastbourne.

Temperatures dropped on Saturday (15 November) and have since fallen further.

A health alert for cold weather was issued on Monday, covering the whole south east of England.

It will remain in force and until Saturday morning (22 November).

The UK Health Security Agency warned people about the potentially significant effects on health and social care services during the cold spell including an increased risk of cold-related deaths.

Advice included keeping homes warm, with a recommended minimum temperature of 64F (18C).

Lol 12 years since any meaningful snow fall. The 10 drops from this morning gone by 7am. Would be nice for a settlement of snow, live wrapping up and walking in snow. Probably never going to happen again.

While people do like moaning about the weather, the threat of snow does bring some excitement – partly because of the visual change to the landscape, and partly because it’s so rare here on the south coast.
The last time snow lay on the ground for long was back in the early 1990s I think, and that was in January. I seem to remember that snow stayed around for a week before it fully melted.
In this case, snow as early as November is a very rare thing.
This morning (Thursday) it was minus 1 in Brighton at 5am, and minus 3 up on the South Downs.
In my lounge it was 9 degrees at breakfast time, and bread from the toaster was cold as soon as it hit the plate.
It should start to warm up a little on Saturday, but not by much.
