Mechanic told to stop selling cars on green outside his home

A Brighton man is being taken to court to stop him using the green outside his home to store and repair cars.

Robin Mouland was given a community protection notice by Brighton and Hove City Council telling him to stop using the green and the public highway in Selham Close and Selham Drive to store cars and vans.

The notice also said he shouldn’t carry out car repairs and maintenance there.

The council is now prosecuting him for allegedly breaching the notice on Saturday 15 November last year.

Mouland, 62, is yet to enter a plea to the charge. He will next appear at court on Monday 12 January.

“Robin Mouland was given a community protection notice by Brighton and Hove City Council telling him to stop using the green and the public highway in Selham Close and Selham Drive to store cars and vans.”

That was the attempt to deal with it, now he’s being prosecuted for breaking that. I know reading an article compromised of 5 sentences is hard but it’s always good to attempt that before commenting.

Well done with your assumptions, but I do prefer a more direct resopnse from the council to public stupidity, as seen on multiple episodes anything less seems to have little or no effect, ergo, cars and vans still on the green, be a long time before they vanish. Feel free to cite council prose and ryhme all you want but results are severely lacking.

Would you rather they went round with henchmen and gave him a good ‘talking to’? What, exactly, did you think your point was?

My point ??? pretty obvious, council should give him reasonable time to clean up, 90 days maybe not several years, after that bill HIM for the clearance. Clear enough for you ??? or why should we pay the council anything if they don’t act ??? clear enough ???

            Just report him to HMRC

Yeah, the CPN is a reasonable first step, they could have gone straight to legal action; gives the man a chance to correct his behaviour, and also gives the council a strong foundation if they need to go to court, which sounds like, in this case, they do.

CPN is the 2nd step following a CPW. It carries a fine, no need for court action. If he carries on, they will serve a NOSP (Notice Seeking Possession). Then court action begins…..

You could certainly use a CPW before this, and a stern word before that! The fact a CPN has a fine attached though, and that this has been going on for a while, and clearly unlawful behaviour, means a CPN is a reasonable first step to start on, right?

It’s been going on for years (at least since 2023) and the council has known about it all that time as residents have been reporting the problem to them directly. The fact it took so long for the council to issue the warning in the first place is a concern, and the fact that they are only now prosecuting a breach is further worrying.

The council could and should have taken action much sooner.

Not a mechanic as nothing ever gets fixed, just a car hoarder who can change brake pads.

I get the hump because people like this often sell crap cars, offer no warranty or comeback etc.
Kerbside cars should always be clamped .
I have to pay for my garage, business rates , etc etc.

Leave him alone he’s trying to help people in the community. Garages are disappearing because the council give property developers the right to take land away from car dealers mechanic’s etc. There won’t be a reasonable garage mechanic left and only expensive ones

I’d bet half the complaints to the council are the smiling neighbours telling him what a great job he’s going to his face.
      Same round our way.
      Can’t beat the old dogooders.

Let him store them at your house then. You obviously don’t know the history of this car hoarder. Please don’t comment when you have no clue of the distress he causes people

This has been going on for years – I’m glad the Council are taking action.

He has been repeatedly to ask to stop by the Council and residents in Coldean. His cars have damaged the grass verge and often left oil on the grass. The building next to it is a care home and on a number of occasions the cars blocked the pavement, preventing wheel chairs and elderly residents from passing.

I’m not sure why anyone is defending such antisocial behaviour.

Hmm, might be worth asking your Ward Councillor if they can push for remedial work to be included?

Maybe its because hes helping people in the community! Im sure, if asked nicely, he’d clean up after himself or if someone gave him a hand.

He was asked nicely. He ignored it to do what he selfishly wanted to do. Now he’s been taken to court.

You are delusional, please go round and offer up your spaces for him to hoard cars for 10 years. You obviously know nothing if this situation

For those of you commenting to leave him alone.
I understand people should. But it is not right to park several vehicles on the grass for long periods
    Of time.
If these vehicles aren’t taxed, current mot and insurance then you could call it fly tipping.
Think about it… He is. The council are pretty quick to fine you for that. Just tell him his has one week.
Then cars will be collected and scraped
He will then be sent a bill for all costs.
    Sorted.

Too many people, generally, think the law does not apply to them so ignore it. Any business at a private residential home should not cause problems for other residents and it probably says that in the deeds, or something like that.
Impound all the wrecks and scrap them, and change him for the costs.
    Law breakers should never win.
