A search at sea and on the shoreline is under way after a dog was spotted by the water’s edge between Ovingdean and Brighton Marina this afternoon (Wednesday 28 January).
The Brighton RNLI lifeboat was launched in case the owner had entered the sea while the shoreline search involved coastguard teams from Shoreham and Newhaven as well as Sussex Police.
The coastguard said: “At around 1.55pm, HM Coastguard received reports of an unattended golden labrador on the beach at Roedean cliffs.
“Concerns were raised over a potential missing owner and Brighton lifeboat, along with Sussex Police and coastguard rescue teams from Shoreham and Newhaven, were sent conduct searches of the area.
“The incident is currently ongoing. If anyone can assist in identifying the owner of this dog, please contact Solent Coastguard on 02392 552100.”
Sussex Police said: “Emergency services are currently in attendance at the undercliff in Roedean following a report of a dog seen alone at the water’s edge.
“A ground and water search is under way to identify the owner.
“The dog has been located by officers and is thought to be a golden retriever.
“Any information is asked to be promptly reported by calling 101, quoting reference 838 of 28/01. Dial 999 in an emergency.”
