Fleeing residents alert police to huge Hove cannabis factory

Reports of people fleeing across back gardens led police to a cannabis factory with thousands of plants in a former Hove hotel.

Members of the public started calling police just before 2.40pm on Wednesday, the first of multiple reports from concerned residents.

Police attended and discovered a significant cannabis cultivation site in a former hotel in First Avenue. There are estimated to be in the region of 2500 plants across several floors of the premises.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of allowing a premises to be used in production of a Class B drug and has been released pending further investigation.

Enquiries are ongoing and officers are appealing to anyone who has noticed recent suspicious activity in the lower First Avenue area to report it to us quoting reference 798 of 11/11.

    Is it the Imperial?

I doubt whether Imperial Brands would like to have that sort of thing going on Christopher.

Yes, Christopher, it is the Imperial, known as the New Imperial Hotel when I worked there over the Christmas and New Year period to earn a few bob in the school holidays.
Note to the editor: it would be helpful if you could name premises featuring in your articles such as the ” Commercial Building ” which caught fire in North Street yesterday morning, as well as this hotel.

I don’t know Christopher – the police won’t give out exact addresses, and I did call them before I put the story up, but they wouldn’t tell me.

In any sane society it would be seen as beneficial to use some mouldering old building to produce what, after all, many of us find helpful , instead of letting it go to rot .

It is a pity that nowadays ‘reporters’ sit in their office and regurgitate police press releases rather than getting out on the street and reporting.

What I’d like to know is why they were fleeing, if before the police were alerted.
