Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries in coast road crash

The A27 has been closed in both directions after a crash between Falmer and Lewes this morning (Tuesday 9 January).

Sussex Police said: “We are currently responding to a serious single-vehicle collision which occurred on the A27 eastbound, between Falmer and Lewes, shortly before 3am.

“The road will remain closed in both directions for some time to allow for forensics and recovery.

“We only get one opportunity to do this and we thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Rush-hours traffic has jammed the A27 as well as diversion routes along the A259 coast road and the A273 and through Ditchling, with three-way traffic lights at Clayton compounding the delays.

The BBC warned drivers: “The queues are absolutely horrendous. The whole area is jammed.”

The broadcaster also said that freezing winds would bring a “feels like” temperature of minus 7C (19F) as some faced delays expected to last more than hour.

The crash happened between Falmer and the Ashcombe roundabout at Kingston

No timescale has yet been given for the reopening of the road.

school in Brighton didn’t open until the last minute before the bell, no teachers, slowly sending the year groups home as teachers failed to turn up resulting in random people teaching lessons they have no clue about.

That was my school. Year 9 and 10 got sent home first and went from there as there were not enough staff to safeguard students (mentioned on the assembly I was in before being sent home)

Typical 3rd world country, 10 hours to clear one car, no wonder this country is screwed…!!!

Clearing 1 car is the easy bit. Determining the cause and crash investigation takes as long as it takes.

My son has been waiting over an hour for a bus to get him to work. In these temperatures that’s just horrendous.

Having spent 3 and a half hours getting to work it beggars belief that East Sussex roads were gridlocked by a single vehicle accident at 3 am!
Do the police have not have any responsability for endeavouring to keep the traffic flowing? I spotted not one officer helping direct the traffic. Quite frankly I believe the police are currently not fit for purpose. It is a disgrace.

Just thank God it wasn’t you in that tragic accident.🙏& you survive another day to go to a job, not everyone is that fortunate for whatever reason

You miss the point. You say tragic but there has been no information regarding deaths or injuries so unsure where your info is coming from.
If there was a death/serious injury then very sorry to hear that but why oh why does it take so long to resolve and no information or diversion signs in place 6 hours later? Saying we’re are all lucky to survive and to have a job is a lazy and sanctimonius platitude.

It is clearly tragic – as the police only call forensics and close the roads when there is a fatality. They don’t release information about death or injuries as that information has to go first to their next of kin. With a name like Martin you are clearly at last middle aged, can’t believe you haven’t learned this yet !

I appreciate the frustration felt by those affected by this crash and I am assuming by the care being taken to investigate the cause that it is either fatal or very serious injury; however spare a thought for the family and friends of the person (s) involved.

Yes a single vehicle accident but who knows how many lives lost. These things take time, like they’ve said, the police & forensics have one shot at doing this and doing it correctly – one morning of our lives delayed – I’m sure we will cope! Thoughts go to the families who will get that hideous knock on the door today and hear the very worst news.

Questioning the actions of police cannot simply just be dismissed because perhaps there was a tragic death (if indeed there was one) Where was the information, the traffic directing etc. The system for dealing with these regular occurences needs total overhauling.

How, on a dead straight empty road, does one have a serious accident ?

Why did the police not have a KPI to clear the road before the morning rush hour?

Turns out a man has died in this incident, hence the forensics. Thoughts to his family
